KALMAR 9x9

A KALMAR Automotive tribute to the greatest road-going Porsche of all time – and the next chapter in game-changing modifications resulting in an entire new car type: “The Retro Hypercar”. The peak of automotive haute couture.

The original underlined how far Porsche engineers could take development in the early ’80s. The result was a “driving laboratory” brimming with cutting-edge technology, such as an adaptive AWD system, active suspension and double wishbone front suspension. A car miles ahead of its time.

The KALMAR 9X9 is the pinnacle of the blooming automotive modernizing culture. A highly desirable, exclusive car delivering usable, modern performance in an iconic form. The core of the KALMAR 9X9 is proven technology, propelled to the next level of performance by state-of-the-art innovations in engineering, design and materials.  Strictly limited with 9 units of each model-line, exclusivity comes naturally. Each car will be tailor made for its owner so no two cars will ever have identical design language nor driving characteristics.

Overall Concept

KALMAR Automotive dares to challenge the established industry. Through creative and innovative design and engineering, this project will set the benchmark for this industry.

MODERNISING AN ICON
Touching the iconic original design requires respect yet daring to challenge our partners to think outside of the box. Passion, technology and innovation go hand-in-hand. By using the very best of today’s cutting-edge technological innovations to bring up to date beauty based on designs of yesterday. The double wishbone pushrod front suspension with added adaptivity does indicate the chosen direction.

HOMOLOGATION
The 9X9 will be a dedicated road car, a vehicle carved into the dream of the customer. Involving yet comfortable, it’s a true GT Sportscar with hypercar performance, a car to savour on any trip. The use of a 993 chassis makes worldwide homologation easier mainly for the all-important US market. Full EU homologation is in place.

SPECIFICATIONS
No stone is left unturned to achieve the targets set. Every element has been considered to extract usable performance. From the exact powertrain, to careful packaging, weight distribution and tuned suspension, but still each car can be tailored to the owner preference. 992 engines, either naturally aspirated or forced induced. PDK or manual, AWD or RWD. Several adaptive components means it is possible to create the best of both worlds.

DESIGN
The famous original silhouette of the original was created to have low drag and no downforce, however 9X9 team had other plans… Lightweight carbon bodywork for immense downforce and aero efficiency has been created. The interior will carry recognisable links to the original however the mix of high-level materials and modern features will surely stand out. Strictly for two, each lightweight seat is personalised to ensure the driver is at one with the 9X9 yet arrives in great shape after every drive.

The Interior

A desired mix of classic design DNA and modern contemporary aspect is best showcased in the instrument cluster being a mix of analogue rev-counter and digital LCD screens all wrapped in high quality materials and craftmanship. Attention to detail is key.

Polstrikoda / FictionDesign and D-composite handle the entire interior design, and production. The target of a road car meant an integrated hidden roll cage for safety and rigidity.

Key Partnerships

KALMAR Automotive has worked in close partnership with Danisi Engineering and Aerotak to push the boundaries further than anyone else has ever done within this sector of the industry. The project management and technical development managed by Danisi Engineering which includes supplier coordination, testing and the subsequent ensuring a lean and effective development process.

Aerotak has overseen the entire bodywork development starting with extensive CFD simulations to produce the targeted downforce yet still carve efficiently through the air. After thorough validation and A-surfaces by FictionDesign.

Danisi Engineering assembles the customer cars in Modena, the heart of Motor Valley, Italy, made famous by other well- known automotive companies. Bodywork is handled by Benefit who is the sole supplier to KALMAR Automotive in exterior surfaces.

The Technical Specifications

Created on a Porsche 993 chassis enhanced via a rigid spaceframe, paired with running gear sourced from selected contemporary Porsche 992 models, dependent on which of the KALMAR 9X9 iteration is chosen.

The 993 chassis was chosen as the starting point for homologation reasons however the extensive modernizing means the 9X9 will deliver the performance, comfort, convenience and quality without the compromises normally found in the retro market.

The KALMAR 9X9 is likely the first retro hypercar which meets modern homologation requirements for the 27 EU member states meaning that it can carry its own Vehicle Identification Number ( VIN ) if required. The entire development has been overseen by the German TÜV who will also undertake the single vehicle homologation testing.

Aerodynamics

All efforts were made to reach the pre project targets during the development of the 9X9. This meant the latest techniques with CFD simulations must be utilized.

The result over 157 kg of downforce at 130 km/h. and over 1450 kg at peak.

Due the original iconic design there were no options to create the downforce on the top surface, so the underbody became the key, hence the use of ground effect floor and adaptive ride height.

The original had zero downforce, but the 9X9 will become a benchmark drivers’ car via real downforce.

Bodywork

From design idea to full carbon fiber bodyshell via simulations and testing – done with selected suppliers managed by Aerotak.

Suspension

Welcome to the double-wishbone push-rod-front-axle designed by Danisi Engineering.

Main subframes from the 992 are carried over to the KALMAR 9X9. The front axle is a fully bespoke pushrod unit allowing both rear and all-wheel-drive setups.

Shock absorbers with adaptive valving and speed dependent 3rd shock absorber element for adaptive spring rate control. To control ground clearance and downforce the 9X9 will produce, the car will benefit from adaptive shock absorber length so the car will always be at the optimum ride height.  Front axle lift system fitted for increased usability.
