KALMAR 7-97 E-Volt

A sports car designed to be enjoyed on the world’s most incredible driving roads, the KALMAR 7-97 E-Volt offers the best of all worlds and is available with a powerful and efficient electric powertrain. With functionality and fun-factor, the 7-97 E-Volt aims to celebrate the much-loved and cherished 911, retaining its iconic silhouette for an overall stunning effect and a heightened driving experience. As with all KALMAR 7-97’s, each model is treated to a streamlined design by KALMAR Automotive’s team. At the same time, the engineers do what is possible to enhance the performance and comfort to provide a superior driving experience.

With its pioneering iconic design, the KALMAR 7-97 E-Volt is specifically designed for those who seek a thrilling car that incorporates the power and benefits of electric propulsion and extreme attention to sustainability. The 7-97 E-Volt has the same extreme attention to detail as the rest of the 7-97 range and an unending number of individual design options for bespoke cosmetics and technical specifications, all with the romance of a classic sports car with a modern flair.

The sky is the limit with the 7-97 E-Volt, and each build is created 100% for its owner, down to even the smallest detail. This is what KALMAR is called – “modern coach-building”.

For 7-97 E-Volt, KALMAR Automotive’s ‘Evergreen’ philosophy draws on state-of-the-art technologies to increase sustainability and reuse where possible. Alongside carrying over many key parts, KALMAR has looked to reuse some of the raw materials from the donor. Examples include aluminium recast from the donor vehicle and glass reformed from the original.

The Exterior

Extensive research and development work has enabled the 7-97 E-Volt to mitigate one of the biggest drawbacks of EV conversions – weight. Thanks to its innovative new-for-2024 plant fibre bodywork for all the exterior and interior panels – the E-Volt benefits from an overall kerb weight equal to that of the donor car with which is shares its outer dimensions.

The 7-97 E-volt debuts KALMAR’s latest exterior design language, named the “R-intake”, as it represents a modern interpretation of the 1967 Porsche 911-R – an almost mythical lightweight study made only in 22 units. This “facelift” evolution of the KALMAR 7-97 bodywork offers enhanced aerodynamics achieved through extensive CFD analysis, and improved cooling delivered in part, by the re-profiled front air intake design. In addition, its flax fibre panels offer up to 78% reduction in the comparative CO2 emissions of carbon fibre, because the plant-based material has already absorbed carbon dioxide during its growth cycle. In addition, bio degradable resin is used to further reduce the environmental footprint.

The revised bodywork has resulted in an improved aero balance over the original. KALMAR has looked to technology to offer further improvements. Its proprietary bonded glass design has been developed to increase efficiency by reducing drag while reducing wind noise and aerodynamic lift, couple with the aerodynamically enhanced underside of the car.

The Interior

The passenger cabin accommodates the modern comfort and convenience features you’d expect to find in a contemporary sports car, discretely and intentionally hidden from view to retain a period look. Highly efficient semi-automatic electric air conditioning keeps the cabin at the ideal temperature, while an Apple CarPlay Bluetooth enabled audio system – with floor mounted active subwoofer – delivers a rousing soundtrack for any trip. Rain sensing wipers and LED headlights are further nods to everyday usability. The 7-97 E-Volt uses environmentally conscious, lightweight ElmoSoft grain leather. Sourced sustainably from Scandinavian cattle, the soft and pliable semi-aniline material offers outstanding comfort and excellent durability and is available in a wide range of colours.

Advanced Aerodynamics

With the KALMAR ethos of only modernising the shape of the KALMAR 7-97 classic without radical design changes, the technical engineers faced the challenge of “making the car better but not changing the original design DNA.”

The engineers quickly realised that it had to be the sum of many more minor adjustments, each contributing to reduced lift and drag. The countless changes are so plentiful that KALMAR dares to call this a “facelift,” although a trained eye is needed to spot the changes. Utilising modern technologies available to the team now, which didn’t exist when the 911 was initially developed, KALMAR Automotive used a combination of advanced motorsport-grade simulation and production technologies. The subtle changes provide reduced wind resistance, simultaneously decrease lift, and improve aero balance to avoid changing the iconic weight distribution that the 911 is famed for. Today, the 7-97 Range is not only faster but handles better, thanks to the tireless work of the engineering team.

For those looking at the geeky details, the aerodynamic changes, which have been CFD simulated (results at 130 km/h), are remarkable, especially when accumulated. The modern, glue-in glass alone reduced lift by 41 kg. Modified airflow  under the car reduced rear lift and thereby shifts aero balance toward the rear. Results show that these changes create a 30% increase in downforce on the front axle and reduce rear-end lift by 20%. When retaining the famous KALMAR Automotive F-series-inspired rear grille design, customers can also opt for a new ducktail spoiler, which decreases lift by a further 60% on the rear to create true downforce!

The Technical Specifications

The 7-97 E-Volt is fitted with a proven, refurbished Tesla Model S drivetrain. The drivetrain is fully optimized in typical KALMAR style, ensuring the full potential of the drivetrain is unlocked. This re-engineering results in an equivalent output of more than 414bhp and 600Nm, more than even the most powerful iteration of road-going donor car version. 964 built, Porsche’s Turbo S 3.6 Exclusive Series – in its day the fastest single-turbo production 911 ever made. The electric motor is positioned in the rear, counterbalanced by the primary battery located at the front axle, with batteries split fore and aft, retaining the famous 911-weight distribution. In the absence of a combustion engine, a front-mounted electric vacuum pump and power-steering ensures the modern feel while also improving weight balance.

An enhanced control board, specified by KALMAR and linked to a 63kWh 350 Volt battery pack comprising high-performance 3p96s prismatic cells, is controlled and monitored by an Orion battery management system with advanced temperature control enabling a DC fast charging function. Charging capability is taken care of by an air-cooled 6.6kW charger capable of adding up to 25 miles of range per hour via a 32 Amp power supply. With the optional CCS fast charging function, a 20 to 80% charge takes just 15 minutes.

Like the rest of the 7-97 E-Volt, an adaptive suspension is tailored for the car and features improved suspension bushing to tackle even the most testing environments. In addition, customers can choose between an OE braking system or KALMAR Automotive’s optional lightweight brakes in steel or ceramic.

Ensuring the KALMAR 7-97 E-Volt is future-proofed for whatever lies ahead, the conversion remains entirely reversible, meaning customers can opt to return the car to traditional combustion power with no significant modifications.

"Taking the Carbon out of Carbon"

To top it all off, our carbon dioxide-eating composite bodywork made from plant fibre is one of those revolutionary developments which, at the time of writing, has only been used for a few selected bodywork items on a handful of racing cars. That is only until now.

KALMAR Automotive has partnered with a leading technology specialist to design and mold a complete plant fibre body shell for our more environmentally-conscious customers, with a bio degradable resin to take it all way.

This revolutionary composite bodywork has immense strength and weight-reducing properties vs the original steel, whilst significantly reducing the comparative CO2 emissions of its carbon fibre-based relative. Since the flax plant fibres used have been absorbing carbon during their growth cycle, the production process will even have a positive influence on the CO2 footprint by reducing it. The race is on to be the first in the world to bring this to the classic car market, and we are ahead already.
