7-97 Classic
A sports car designed to be enjoyed on the world’s most incredible driving roads, the KALMAR 7-97 Classic offers the best of all worlds and is available in three desirable models – either as a coupé, a cabriolet or a targa. With functionality and fun-factor, the 7-97 Classic, in any form, aims to celebrate the much-loved and cherished 911, retaining its iconic silhouette for an overall stunning effect and a heightened driving experience. Each model is treated to a streamlined design by KALMAR Automotive’s team. At the same time, the engineers do what is possible to enhance the performance and comfort to provide a superior driving experience.
With its pioneering iconic design, the KALMAR 7-97 Classic is designed for those who seek a thrilling car that is more of an experience than most. All 7-97 Classic models have the same extreme attention to detail and a combined unending number of individual design options for bespoke cosmetics and technical specifications, all with the romance of a classic air-cooled sports car with a modern flair.
The sky is the limit with the 7-97 Classic, and each build is created 100 per cent for its owner, down to even the smallest detail, whether sport, comfort, or a modern combination of both is desired.
The KALMAR Evergreen concept is also available for all 7-97 models. From its carbon dioxide-reducing lightweight flax fibre bodyshell to the mentality of using more parts from the donor car, the Evergreen concept focuses on unscrupulous sustainability.
Production of the 7-97 Classic is limited to 12 cars per year worldwide. They are produced to be unique and personal companions of the owners and to tour the world, showcasing the iconic blend of the past and the future.
The Exterior
With the foundation of an air-cooled 964- or 993-series 911 and staying true to the iconic classic design cues of the Sixties and Seventies, the exterior lines of the KALMAR 7-97 Classic perfectly blend iconic looks with modern technology. Even with the 110 mm wider bodywork, the instantly recognisable curves remain. However, it benefits from an exclusive and optimised KALMAR Automotive in-house produced full carbon fibre body, allowing the 7-97 models, the coupé, cabriolet, and targa, to excel in functionality and design – all while being extremely lightweight.
If you choose the 993-era 911 as a basis, the modern driving experience comes from the contemporary multi-link rear axle, a six-speed gearbox, and adaptive shock absorbers. However, if you’re more “old-school,” the rear suspension of the 964-generation car will take you right back to the beginning. Combined with all the other endless bespoke elements, these upgrades make the car truly unique and a joy to
drive, regardless of the chosen starting point. But it doesn’t stop there – customers can go one step further and choose the exact model that fits their desire and driving type – a coupé, cabriolet or the combination of both with the targa?
The coupé is the lightest and stiffest of the trio, and removing the rain gutters instantly changes its appearance without losing any of its iconic looks. This allows the car to achieve a higher top speed due to its more streamlined, aerodynamic design.
The foldable roof is the main focus that differentiates the KALMAR 7-97 Cabriolet from the other models in the 7-97 Classic family. The KALMAR 7-97 Cabriolet is the perfect model for the driver who enjoys feeling the wind in their hair or lives in sunnier climes. An astonishing sports car with a retractable roof balances elements from past and present to create perfect harmony in performance and elegance in design.
For those looking for the joy of a convertible car while having the possibility to enjoy it all year round due to the functionality of the sizeable retractable roof, the KALMAR 7-97 Targa is the perfect fit. The iconic classic naturally turns heads and offers its driver a convertible experience that is extremely special. While the large glass roof is a prominent feature of the car, the reason for the modern solution is the essential element of reducing the wind noise, as it often detracts from the driving experience in the original vehicle. This way, drivers enjoy the engine’s roar on their journey with the 7-97 Targa.
The lightweight concept is not just limited to the carbon fibre bodywork; it is also achieved on these models by removing all unnecessary items, including introducing a modern, ultra-lightweight lithium battery and using other cutting-edge materials throughout.
The rear-end design offers different options, from the unique rear grille adding a sleek design element to the body to the iconic but greatly enhanced ducktail that is proven to add a significant racing pedigree to the entire appearance of the 7-97 Classic.
After intensive aerodynamic testing, the KALMAR 7-97 Classic now comes with improved modern glue-in glass, reducing not only drag and wind noise but also significantly increasing the window area. Likewise, advancements like adding modern Bi-LED headlights make night driving a joy, which is a big change from the original.
All the metal beauty pieces, such as door handles, windows, and light surroundings, come in a durable ceramic coating but can also be made in chrome if the customer desires.
The lightweight three-piece split rims with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres provide extra grip and stability and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to support different driving styles. Proven and tested on racetracks and roads around the world, these tyres and wheels are fitted to ensure each 7-97 Classic handles as it should yet remain a classic grand tourer deep within.
The bodyline and style create a perfect combination of vintage influence and state-of-the-art technology to form a beautiful, classic appearance – all still entirely unique to each commission.
The Interior
The options for the detailed interior in the KALMAR 7-97 Classic models are unending. KALMAR Automotive’s ethos is to provide the opportunity for the ultimate bespoke car for each personal commission, and there is nowhere better to express a customer’s artistic side than with the interior. A blank canvas to create any customer’s real underlining desire with their 7-97 Classic.
Whether the focus will be on creating a surprisingly capable GT car or for use as a thrilling day-to-day runaround, the KALMAR 7-97 Classic models can be modified to fit both tasks. Despite sporting a stripped-back, spartan interior style, the addition of ultra-comfortable Recaro specialist seats provides excellent support, even on extra- long journeys. The KALMAR team also acknowledges the essential safety elements in a sports car. It offers options such as a leather-covered roll cage and double airbags while keeping the classic look intact.
Modern aspects such as remote central locking, a hidden Bluetooth audio system, a phone charging option, and rain sensors are also included in all KALMAR 7-97 Classic models, as are the painted carbon inserts that style the legendary foldable Porsche rear seats.
The bespoke aspect of a KALMAR 7-97 Classic Coupé, Cabriolet, or Targa creates unimaginable personalisation possibilities, all handmade and created to the customer’s imagination.
An entirely new customised sound system with hidden Bluetooth sound units, four loudspeakers and an active subwoofer ensures that customers can always enjoy the best music from their phone unless they want to hear the soundtrack from the flat-six engine.
Advanced Aerodynamics
Underpinning the 7-97 Classic Range is the all-new, advanced aerodynamic overhaul introduced with the “silent facelift.” It allows the car to go faster and be more planted at speed, yet with added comfort over the original.
With the KALMAR ethos of only modernising the shape of the KALMAR 7-97 classic without radical design changes, the technical engineers faced the challenge of “making the car better but not changing the original design DNA.”
The engineers quickly realised that it had to be the sum of many more minor adjustments, each contributing to reduced lift and drag. The countless changes are so plentiful that KALMAR dares to call this a “facelift,” although a trained eye is needed to spot the changes. Utilising modern technologies available to the team now, which didn’t exist when the 911 was initially developed, KALMAR Automotive used a combination of advanced motorsport-grade simulation and production technologies. The subtle changes provide reduced wind resistance, simultaneously decrease lift, and improve aero balance to avoid changing the iconic weight distribution that the 911 is famed for. Today, the 7-97 Classic Range is not only faster but handles better, thanks to the tireless work of the engineering team.
For those looking at the geeky details, the aerodynamic changes, which have been CFD simulated (results at 130 km/h), are remarkable, especially when accumulated. The modern, glue-in glass alone reduced lift by 41 kg. Modified cooling on the underside of the car shifts aero balance toward the rear, together with the adapted ride height and rake of the 7-97 Classic Range. Results show that these changes create a 30 per cent increased downforce on the front axle and reduce rear-end lift by 20 per cent. When retaining the famous KALMAR Automotive F-series-inspired rear grille design, customers can also opt for a new ducktail spoiler, which decreases lift by a further 60 per cent on the rear to create true downforce!
The result for the driver is remarkable, as stability remains at all speeds to create predictable handling—a testimony to KALMAR Automotive’s uncompromising attitude.
The Technical Specifications
With the bespoke nature of all KALMAR cars, the specifications are individual for all customers depending on their vision of the “perfect car”. The KALMAR 7-97 Classic line can be imagined with a race-like specification or as a grand tourer, all with high levels of comfort and usability.
The opportunities are endless when designing a KALMAR 7-97 Classic Coupé, Cabriolet or Targa, with options from KALMAR Automotive’s all-new engine pairing.
The “base” engine with true 3.8-litre displacement, single throttle body, double mass flywheel, and easy to maintain hydraulic lifters, all totaling to 355 hp and 410 Nm of torque. For those looking for more power and sound, the optional ‘Triple-4’ engine is built with individual throttle bodies, mechanical lifters, a single mass flywheel, double oil cooler all of which see the ‘Triple-4’ achieve 401 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
Each variant comes as standard with a drive-by Wire e-gas system, KALMAR intakes, a bespoke sports exhaust as well as the mission to use either new or reconditioned components for all moving parts within the engine
The unique KALMAR Automotive ECU with OBDII Engine Management System and remote access takes away most worries for the owner, as does the enlarged oil cooler set-up alongside the coil on plug ignition as they contribute towards further reliability, accommodating for high-speed running and increased horsepower.
Utilising only the best-of-the-best materials and suppliers for a ‘no-compromise’ approach to increasing the overall performance of the car, the all-new engines will be delivered through all 7-97 Classic models from 2023.
An entirely new adaptive active suspension features new ground-breaking design front dampers with an optional hydraulic lift function. At the same time, harder-than-OEM rubber bushes allow KALMAR Automotive to specify the optimum suspension type for the driver. The adaptive shocks constantly adjust to being a perfect mix of sport and comfort with several drive modes available. If more of a race feeling is requested, then optional rear rose jointed top mounts and full moonball suspension arms will finish the set-up perfectly for the close-to-race experience.
The 7-97 Classic comes standard with the bespoke lightweight KALMAR race-specified brake system. The non-assisted design ensures that the car is more reliable and responsive, retaining the classic driving feel without any brake fade. Optional carbon ceramic brakes are available to further enhance the unsprung mass and for better stopping capabilities.
The original steering feel is almost mystical, so advanced electrical adaptive power steering is included. It adds a bit more horsepower to the wheels when driving along the landscape when it’s fully turned off, so drivers are in perfect control of the 7-97 Classic without any interference.
Additional attention has been given to chassis stiffness to ensure a thrilling driving experience and a staggering top speed. The increase in the chassis’s torsional rigidity is made without compromising the car’s lightness, which is a component that all KALMAR projects are renowned for. The modification allows the suspension to work more efficiently, resulting in an increase in handling, responsiveness to driver input, and overall comfort quality.
The unique weight distribution is also crucial to the team, a feat accomplished during the development process, not least by including an electrical air-conditioning unit and electrical power steering, which also helps create a beautiful engine bay. All these intelligent elements come together, resulting in an ultra-low weight that produces super sharp, direct handling.
The list of included options is long on a KALMAR 7-97 Classic, but there are some possible options such as centre-lock wheels, front axle lift system and the optional “Triple-4” engine. There are also some further upgrade packages available.
– An additional carbon fibre package including doors, roof (only Coupé) and a
leather-covered rear roll cage
– A complete leather package where the backside of the front seats and whole rear
inserts are covered in leather
– Safety package with double airbag set up
All can be chosen and added depending on each customer’s desired end specification and usage of their 7-97 Classic.
Options
With unlimited option combinations for each KALMAR 7-97, every customer commission is fully bespoke and comes with a personal process to coachbuild a dream car by hand. There’s no configurator; there’s not even a “no” in KALMAR Automotive’s vocabulary, just a passion for upcycling and re-engineering a 7-97 Classic to reach the customer’s overarching goal.
